LPB 2025 Results

After far too much time, and a few bugs to iron out, we bring you the LPB 2025 Results....

NB: These are results as submitted via the officially low key Great Kiwi Gravel web form. These are not strava results or officially timed results, nor do they matter.

What matters is that people got out for an adventure of some form, rode up some hills and made some friends.

So, please do enjoy these results and stories. Stand by for LPB 2026 on the new date of 31st Oct/1st Nov, with three new courses being dropped.

And now for the stories... (anonymised to protect identity and pride)

"Bonked very hard with 25km to go and thought that a panicked thinking a piece of grass was a big stone in my shoe so pulled my foot out while riding and jumped off. Remedied myself with a coke, sprite, rocky road ice cream, 2x snicker and a bag of sour squirms."

"Heart stopping moment was having a large Angus steer try to run me down along Bossu Road decent. Most memorable moment was cold shower under waterfall 2/3 way up Bossu tarmac climb in the heat of the day. Stopped for water at Pigeon Bay, Akaroa boat ramp, Wainui, little river (and coke to assist chase down of the rider up the road). Also stopped at Duvauchelle for food and coke. Fun type 2 day and surprised myself finishing 8 minutes behind someone else."

"It was good!! Not sure the sausage roll and chocolate milk in Akaroa were the best ride food."

"It was a savage ride. I spoke to lots of friendly people and I learnt that I can climb about 3,500m in a day just fine but any more and my body starts shutting down."

"Started the 300 ended on a chose your own adventure program. Life and gearing choices were questioned. Will never do it again, until next year… thanks team"

"After getting off a plane the day before after a 3 week eating and drinking tour I was less than prepared for the brutality of this event. Many great chats, lovely characters along the way, made even better by the scenes at the top of each punishing climb. I would never recommend this event, see you again next year."

"First time riding this brevet at 60 years old. Had some cramp issues on Bossu which resulted in walking when having to press hard on the pedals. Fantastic event, very satisfying."

"Rode with my pal Shona - we had many plans to bail but somehow got to the finish!"

"Great day out. Some solid climbs, great descents on that freshly graded gravel, and friendly riders everywhere! However, despite the warnings at the briefing, I still managed to run out of water and the twinges of cramp along the tops after the delightful ascent of Middle Road took full hold after Akaroa, even after a full refuel and a lengthy lay down in the shade. Anything that even remotely resembled an incline locked up my legs and I had to walk. That included the entire ascent of Bossu Road. The legs eventually came right and finished fine. But what a bloody rookie! Always good to come away with some learnings and scope for improvement! Thanks for a great event. Kudos to those doing the 300!"

"I was going really well until i met a car on Reynolds Valley Road, then I wasn't going at all lol"

"I rode a touring bike with panniers, had a few issues with the bike but each time I needed a tool or something I didn't have it seemed some random person would be there to help, it was like magic. I loved the ride, definitely found the middle road out of pigeon Bay a challenge and also had to walk some of the downhill gravel bits on both days as my tyres were a bit thin without much grip. I stayed at Devauchelles camp ground and had a big feed at the local fish n chip shop/ pub. My favourite parts were when I was riding with other people, I really enjoyed the whole route from Devauchelles back to chch. Thanks so much for putting on this event, I hope to do it again!"

"Felt good at the start start, had a bad time climbing out of pigeon bay. I rallied a bit after a break in Akaroa, thinking that there was only one big climb left. By the time I made it to the top of bossu road I was cooked and my left ankle was very sore. After another break in Little River, I was feeling alright about the 50ish flat ks to the finish line. Between the ankle and the exhaustion I limped across the line at 11.00 at night."

"May choose to sleep in a ditch next time. 2 snoozes in ditches this time. Surprisingly enjoyed the double fence line. My saddle, shorts and I were not on good terms at the end."

"It was type 2 fun at its best. Thank you!"

"A true SOLO.kiwi ride. Missed the group briefing as I had to work. Got to Hansen Park and started the ride 10:23am.

Superb (but hot!) Spring conditions for my first real ride out on the Peninsula. I knew I would probably miss open shops at Akaroa so I decided take enough food for 24hr.

Big challenges were the hill up to Mt Herbert and along the track there seemed to take longer than I thought. The heat and lack of wind on top made it tough.

Once I climbed back out of Little River to the summit road, I made good time down into the northern bays. Started to meet some friendly riders who had started earlier and we exchanged the days' stories.

Night fell climbing Big Hill and I made the mistake of thinking Akaroa was not far away!! A couple more climbs and a tricky grass decent and I finally arrived at sleepy Akaroa to fill my bottles at the campground.

A warmer top was exchanged and I pressed on.

The climb up from Wainui was tough but made rewarding by the unique evening. A clear sky, little breeze and silhouette mountains. Very special. Descended back to Little River with the sky brightening and I could sense the end was near!

Felt god climbing back up again as daylight brought renewed energy.

The sealed ride back around the port hills and a return to civilization was satisfying but somewhat disappointing that my 24hr escape in the wilderness was at an end."

"Turns out some more hill training would have been a good idea! Super hot conditions and alot of faffing meant we rolled into Akaroa just after 11pm. The fence-line track was tough on a gravel bike and ended up taking alot longer than expected. Had about 6 hours sleep at the Top10 and left Akaroa just after 8am on Sunday telling ourselves that surely the hills wouldn't be as tough as day 1 but we were very wrong. The wind picked up by the afternoon and we enjoyed a decent tailwind heading toeard the final climb. Rolled into Hansen Park with about 30mins to spare. Might refine the bike choice and training plan for next year."

"It was a unique experience. Incredible weather....if a little too hot, and amazing views. The night ride under the full moon was pretty special, as was the sunset over Akaroa. Oh, and I suppose I should mention that it was extremely tough."

"Missed middle Rd and the small diversions at Akaroa Great day out hard but doable for a 70 year old"

"We went for the 'nice' option, and exceeded our own expectations by actually finishing it, and set new PBs for elevation and suffering. My lowest point was Middle Road, but the highs were many, including reaching the top of Middle Road and climbing up Bossu Road into the clouds. Shout-out to the bikers we kept bumping into on the trail; so many tired but friendly faces. A very nice weekend out was had."

"Great intro to riding on the Banks Peninsula after coming down from Nelson for the weekend.

Found it pretty challenging riding towards home on Summit road in the dark with thick cloud, a light that was running out of battery and sleep deprivation. Couldn't see the edges of the road so had to ride down the centre where I could see the paint lines emerging out of the fog one at a time."

"Had a hot and bothered first day with heat and lack of gears (32-36) about to pull the pin at Akaroa. Crawled into sleeping bag. Woke in morning and had a much better day. A bit cooler and the legs had warmed up. Stormed home after Gebbies"
